A program about the impact of energy development and food production enterprises in southwestern Pennsylvania will be presented by the Saint Vincent College Environmental Awareness Club, Tri-Beta National Biological Honor Society and Communications Club at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8 at the Fred M. Rogers Center on the campus of Saint Vincent College. Admission is free and open to the public.

Speakers will be Don Kretchmann of the Kretchmann Family Farm in Pittsburgh, a 1971 graduate of Saint Vincent College who operates an organic farm, and Kirsi Jansa, a documentary filmmaker who will discuss her documentary films about the effect of energy development on farm production.

The Kretchmanns, one of the first organic growers in western Pennsylvania, have served area residents at farmers’ markets and other outlets with organically grown, chemical-free produce, vegetables and meats for 43 years utilizing their three-acre orchard, area farmland and several greenhouses. They have also operated a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) service for two decades which provides boxes of organic produce to neighborhoods and businesses by subscription. In addition to growing food, the farm also produces solar energy.

Jansa is an independent filmmaker who began her career in Finish broadcasting and migrated to the U.S. As a Pennsylvania resident, she has produced numerous documentaries including Gas Rush Stories, a project funded by the Heinz Endowment that has earned several awards for its human interest stories and fact-based presentation about the fracking process used by Pennsylvania shale gas extraction operators. Recently named a fellow in the Pittsburgh Filmmakers Flight School for developing artists, she is beginning a new documentary on sustainability.

Event coordinator is Anthony Sellitto, president of the Environmental Awareness Club, a junior environmental science major from North Huntingdon.
