We are thrilled to kick off our 45th season with one of the most popular plays we have ever presented: another joyous comedy from the author of last summer’s smash hit, THE FOREIGNER.  The year is 1981 and, on the eve of his 34th birthday, mild-mannered architect Willum Cubbert is unhappy: his girlfriend is leaving town for a job half-way across the country, and he is trying to please a difficult client without compromising his professional ideals.  Worst of all, he seems to lack the spirit to make any positive changes for himself.  Then he receives an unexpected surprise: Rick Steadman, the man who saved his life 10 years earlier in Vietnam, but whom he never met, is coming for a visit.  Willum is delighted to have the opportunity to thank his savior at last.  There’s just one problem…Rick turns out to be a nightmare: an obnoxious, rude, bumbling oaf.  And he’s planning on staying with Willum indefinitely.  Rick’s nerdish impact on Willum’s world is at once hilarious (for the audience) and challenging (for Willum).  But can sweet-tempered Willum find the gumption to confront a man to whom he owes so much?  If so, Rick Steadman may have saved his life for a second time… Don’t miss this raucous comedy!

"…the audience almost never stops laughing—handkerchiefs wiping away tears of merriment…" —Variety

"…a spring tonic of side-bruising laughter…" —The Milwaukee Tribune

THE NERD is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York
